This course covers the basic tenets of the Christian faith from a Biblical perspective. Bible doctrines covered during this course include Bibliology, Theology Proper, Anthropology, Angelology, and Hamartiology.

BI103—Old Testament Survey

3 credit hours

This survey course examines each book of the Old Testament by its writer, chronology, purpose, and characteristic content. Special attention is given to the prominent events of origin and history.

This survey course examines each book of the New Testament by its writer, chronology, purpose, and characteristic content. The background and purpose as well as a general outline of each book will be covered.

BI105—Chronological Bible Storying

3 credit hours
This course is designed to teach the Bible through the chronological method. It emphasizes the basic thematic foundations of salvation based upon an understanding of God as He has revealed Himself in the Bible. The chronological Bible teaching method is particularly advantageous in cultures where the Bible and its stories are unknown.

BI106—Life of Christ

2 credit hours
This course is a comparative study of the four Gospel accounts, designed to provide students with a comprehensive and chronological perspective of the time and life of Christ. Particular attention is given to the thematic elements of each Gospel as well as the messages and teachings of our Lord.

BI107—Hermeneutics

2 credit hours
This course is a study as well as an application of the rules of Biblical interpretation. Students will learn a literal, grammatical, historical, pre-millennial, and dispensational interpretation of Scripture.

BI201—Spiritual Warfare, Suffering, & Martyrdom

3 credit hours
This course equips the believer with Biblical truths and perspectives regarding spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare is examined from a mission's worldview in light of God’s sovereignty. Concepts covered include angelology, prayer, holy living, Christian suffering, and potential martyrdom. The impact persecution has played throughout church history and is playing today in many parts of the world will also be examined.

BI202—Homiletics 1

2 credit hours
This men-only course covers the call of the preacher as well as preaching methodology. Topics of instruction include the various types of sermons, message preparation, and sermon delivery. Students will have opportunities to practice preaching with instructor and peer evaluations.

BI203—Homiletics 2

2 credit hours
This men-only course is a continuation of BI202. Sermon and delivery instruction is continued with students now preaching not only amongst peers and the instructor but also in more formal settings with continued input through academic assessment.

BI204—Acts: The Life of Paul

3 credit hours
This course examines the person and work of the Holy Spirit in the birth of the early church. The person and life of Paul are then studied through the perspective of some of his epistles, particularly the books of Thessalonians, Corinthians, Galatians, Philemon, Colossians, Ephesians, and Philippians. This study is superimposed within the context of the Book of Acts to give further insight into its chronological, historical, and cultural significance.

BI205—Biblical Evangelism

3 credit hours
This course is designed to prepare every student to share their faith boldly without fear in any situation both publicly and privately. Based on the Biblical mandate to evangelize, students are introduced to the mechanics of conversation with the end goal of becoming comfortable in engaging and conversing with persons about their eternal destiny. The course involves practical concepts including role play and instructor-led witnessing outside the classroom.

BI206—Scripture Printing

2 credit hours
This unique course provides the Biblical basis of the responsibility of the church to print, publish, and preserve God’s Word. Students examine the canonization of the Holy Scripture and the history of the King James Bible while being introduced to Bearing Precious Seed of First Baptist Church of Milford.

BI207—Daniel & Revelation

2 credit hours
This course is an expository study of the prophetic portions of Daniel and the entire book of Revelation. Students examine truths associated with prophecy for Israel, the last days, and the chronology of events to come including the pre-tribulation rapture and the millennial reign.

BI208—Bible Praying

2 credit hours
This practical Biblical study of the privilege, power, and purpose of prayer is accomplished through six interrogatives: who, what, where, when, why, and how. Course objectives are met by examining Biblical characters as well as Jesus Himself in regard to worship and prayer.

BI209—Romans

2 credit hours
This course is an expository study of the book of Romans. The topics of condemnation, justification, sanctification, and Christian responsibilities are highlighted. Key portions of Scripture are required to be committed to memory.

BI210—Pastoral Epistles

2 credit hours
This men-only course is a verse-by-verse study of the books of Timothy and Titus. The instructions, exhortations, and qualifications for the prospective pastor are examined in light of the stewardship of the local church.

BI211—The Book of Job

2 credit hours
This course is an expositional study of the Book of Job, revealing the inherent, concurrent themes of sovereignty, suffering, spiritual attack, and science. The study is further complemented through studying various character insights into the story of Job’s dark days.

BI212—Hebrew History

2 credit hours
This course is a selective, Biblical study of the Hebrew people. Through persons, events, and prophesies of the Old Testament, students will see God’s promise and purpose for Israel, His chosen people, revealed. After this study, students will have a deeper understanding of God’s redemptive nature witnessed through the nation of Israel.

BI213—Book of Hebrews

2 credit hours
This course takes a passage-by-passage approach to the book of Hebrews. Special attention is given to authorship and the chapter known as the “Hall of Faith,” Hebrews chapter 11. Further focus is given to the message delivered to the Hebrews of the author’s day as well as the application the book of Hebrews holds today for all believers.

BI301—Pentateuch & Old Testament Prophets

3 credit hours
This course is a combined study of the first five books of the Bible and the major and minor prophets. Attention is given to the chronological and historical setting of each book along with the Messiah’s mission, purpose, authority, scope, and message to Israel and the Gentiles.

BI302—Advanced Theology

2 credit hours
This course is an independent research and undergraduate-level thesis and, therefore, has a limited number of lectures. Subjects range from a deeper study of the primary doctrines to a basic overview of apologetics. Research will include contemporary theological issues with special attention to Calvinism and Arminianism.

BI303—Colossians

2 credit hours
This course covers the book of Colossians passage-by-passage and, at times, verse-by-verse. Colossians was written to correct wayward thinking regarding placing man’s philosophy ahead of sound doctrine. Emphasis is given to practical application for daily living based upon critical passages, making it a rich and highly recommended study for those entering Christian service.

CM101—Introduction to Missions

2 credit hours
This introductory course exposes students to topics that will be examined independently and in greater detail throughout the undergraduate study. Topics include the theology and history of missions, preparations for the missionary family, cross-cultural communication, and current mission trends and strategies.

CM102—Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

3 credit hours
This course introduces students to the discipline of anthropology from a Christian perspective, helping them to more easily adapt to a variety of cultures. Students will investigate the influence that language, class, gender, social organization and authority, family relationships, education, and ideologies have upon a culture.

CM103—Children’s Ministry on the Foreign Field

3 credit hours
This course teaches how to establish, organize, and run a children’s ministry within a culture foreign to the missionary’s own culture. Special attention is given to training students to teach God’s Word. The materials for this course are gleaned from and partially taught by Abb Thomas, the founder of Master Ministries.

CM201—Ethnography & Missions Strategy

3 credit hours
This course introduces students to the vast array of people groups in the world for the purpose of strategic development. Students will learn how to perform ethnography (initial research) on a particular people group, including their worldview framework, social structures, religions, arts, and history, thus instilling in the missionary candidate the ability to devise a plan to reach lost peoples of the world.

CM202—History of the Church & World Missions

3 credit hours
This course provides students with a historical overview of world missionary activity from the time of Christ to modern times. Students will study pivotal moments that changed the course of missions. By examining the lives of world evangelists who have gone before, students will be encouraged and inspired.

CM203—Cross-Cultural Church Planting

3 credit hours
This course is a Biblical study of the indigenous church based on the church of Antioch in the New Testament. The indigenous church is defined and analyzed in light of the demographics, culture, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit as a model church type for all present-day church reproductions.

CM204—Solutions to Cross-Cultural Stress

2 credit hours
This modular course presents the common problems cultural stress has on the missionary, his family, and the people groups to whom he is sent. Students will learn to identify the most common causes of cultural stress and how to successfully deal with these in a scriptural manner on the field. The primary goal of the course is to emphasize that no level of cultural stress can be handled successfully without a close relationship with the Lord and a dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

CM301—Missiology & Issues in Missions

3 credit hours
This course sets forth a Biblical foundation and framework for fulfilling the Great Commission through world evangelization. Students will be introduced to issues relating to pneumatology (signs, wonders, and spiritual gifts), the eternal status of heathen peoples, universalism, justice, charismatic issues, ecumenism, indigenization, etc. Students will also learn to handle issues of contextualization, engaging a culture with the Gospel from a Biblical perspective.

CM302—Intercultural Communications

2 credit hours
This course investigates how a cultural worldview shapes the dynamics of how a culture communicates. Students will observe how context, time, power, gender, and honor affect communication. Practical considerations related to ministry communication in a cross-cultural setting are emphasized. Areas of study include relationships, evangelism, discipleship, church planting, teaching, and conflict resolution.

This practical course delves into the common duties, responsibilities, and opportunities of being a missionary. Important aspects of study include personal issues, family life, and ministry on the field.

CM304—Cultural Adaptation for Missionaries

3 credit hours
This study focuses on the needs of potential full-time, cross-cultural missionaries. The course will help students prepare for intercultural stress, the difficulties involved with raising a family overseas, and the difficulties related to a personal walk with God when little accountability is present. Tools for coping with the difficulty of cultural adaption, both when moving to a cross-cultural situation and when returning to one’s culture of origin will also be presented.

CM401—Capstone Cross-Cultural Internship 1

9 credit hours
This course is a structured, cross-cultural experience approved and facilitated by the BSWE internship coordinator and supervised by an on-field mentor from a foreign host ministry. The host ministry must reflect the basic philosophy and emphasis of First Baptist Church of Milford and its ministries. The mentor will ensure that the student receives exposure to predetermined core objectives and will evaluate the student’s interactions in the foreign culture in various aspects of cross-cultural ministry. In order to receive 9 credit hours, students must complete 600 contact hours with the foreign host ministry (20 consecutive weeks without leave). Normally, the student is registered for this class for the fall semester of his senior year; however, in some cases, internships may begin during the summer prior to the student’s senior year.

CM402—Capstone Cross-Cultural Internship 2

9 credit hours
This course is a continuation of CM401 and is to be congruent (without leave) with the same foreign host ministry. The host ministry mentor(s) will be responsible for continued discipleship while ensuring the student’s exposure to challenges and successes while experiencing new targeted objectives.

LL100—Basic English Grammar and Composition

2 credit hours
This course is a basic grammar course for students who have either not received an adequate SAT/ACT score or successfully completed high school English.

LL101—Advanced Grammar and Composition

3 credit hours
This course consists of a review of grammar, spelling, vocabulary, capitalization, punctuation, and syntax, and places a particular emphasis on college writing. Various styles of writing are examined for the purpose of training students to formally compile, construct, and articulate in written form.

LL102—Literatures of the World

3 credit hours
The course illuminates the effect literature plays in society and in a person’s worldview. This course is designed to have students examine a variety of well-known world literature for a threefold purpose: to evaluate the impact that literature has on communication, to see the significance that literature plays as it relates to culture and people, and to compose writings that reflect and substantiate the course objectives.

LL103—Biblical Languages Introduction

2 credit hours
This modular course is a survey study of Biblical languages. It includes an overview of the Greek and Hebrew alphabets, common Bible vocabulary, and identification of verb conjugation forms. In addition, a thorough methodology for conducting Hebrew and Greek word studies is taught and practiced.

LL104—Beginning Greek 1

This course builds a basic foundation in New Testament Greek grammar from the alphabet to the present participle. It includes a progressive accumulation of Biblical Greek vocabulary.

This course is a continuation of LL104 and builds a basic foundation in New Testament Greek grammar from the aorist participle to the comparison of adjectives. It continues the accumulation of vocabulary from LL104.

LL201—Introduction to TESOL

3 credit hours
This course teaches how to model and communicate the Gospel message in a country that guards against religious activity. This course outlines the process for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as a vehicle by which one can introduce Christ in such a guarded, foreign culture. The instruction introduces the operational method of teaching conversational English to internationals while identifying the cultural and spiritual obstacles inherent to this endeavor.

This course is a continuation of the study of Koine Greek with an emphasis in lexicon use. Translation of passages in 1 John and Mark will form the basis for progressing in the study of Greek syntax.

LL204—Introduction to Language Studies

3 credit hours
This foundational course provides students with a general introduction to the study of languages and special areas of interest within linguistics including the structural, historical, psychological, and social aspects of language. Students will also be introduced to basic linguistics terminology found in academic literature.

LL205—Introduction to Linguistic Analysis

3 credit hours
This course introduces students to linguistic analysis of each sub-discipline critical to language description including phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic analysis. Students will analyze a small selection of authentic language datasets using tools and analytical approaches taught in class.

LL301—Articulatory Phonetics

3 credit hours
This course equips students to recognize, name, produce, transcribe, and categorize virtually all the sounds that occur in spoken languages. This is accomplished by combining the theory and practice of articulatory phonetics using intensive drills in definition, recognition, production, and transcription of the whole range of sounds used in human speech. The course is designed to enable missionaries to learn languages more rapidly and accurately while forming the basis for some to go further to do technical work as field linguists.

LL302—Second Language Acquisition

3 credit hours
This course introduces students to the language-learning process using an experience-centered approach. Students completing the course should be able to manage their own self-directed learning programs or design language-learning programs for institutions. They will understand language learning as simultaneously socio-cultural and psycholinguistic and will understand how second language ability and use change over time in both the socio-cultural and cognitive dimensions.

LL303—Beginning Hebrew 1

3 credit hours
This course builds a basic foundation in Old Testament Hebrew grammar from elements of non-verbal grammar such as nouns, adjectives, and prepositions. It includes a progressive accumulation of Biblical Hebrew vocabulary and the study of two major finite verbal inflections, the perfect and the imperfect.

LL307—Sociolinguistics & Cross-Cultural Communications

3 credit hours
This course is an overview of how language relates to the society in which it was produced. Students will be able to articulate why certain languages are chosen as national or educational standards within a given society; understand concepts and psychological factors at play in multi-lingual societies; discern attitudes language speakers have towards time, social class, networks, and gender; and to discern attitudes toward particular languages by segments of world societies. Finally, students will prepare for ministry in cross-cultural settings by being introduced to practical communication insights in areas such as relationships, evangelism, discipleship, church planting, teaching, and conflict.

This course is designed to prepare students to speak with confidence and formality. Elementary aspects such as speech tone, inflection, body language, and clutter will be addressed. Emphasis is placed on the essentials of sincerity, practice, and preparedness.

This entry-level course is designed to introduce students to the basics of Christian education and classroom management. Since most missionaries and pastors will incorporate Sunday school or a day school into their ministries, the need to understand the principles and philosophy of Christian education is a crucial part of any ministry.

NM201—Marriage & Family in Christ

2 credit hours
This course focuses on the special demands and stresses placed on the Christian worker and his family. It is designed to address issues in marriage preparedness including Biblical priorities, communication, fidelity, intimacy, Biblical treatment of divorce, conflict resolution, finances, and the training of children.

NM202—Women in Ministry

2 credit hours
This ladies-only course instructs and encourages women in their prominent role in ministry and as ministry wives. Instructors for this course include several ministry wives who will provide a variety of their own personal insights and experiences to help prepare ladies for all aspects of ministry.

NM203—Formal Ministry Internship 1

2 credit hours
This course allows students to participate in a formal and academic ministry mentorship by observing and participating in areas of ministry related to evangelism, discipleship, and church ministry. Approval for the internship is required from the internship coordinator. The student is graded Pass/Fail based in part by a report from the student’s mentor. Students must complete fifty (50) hours of mentor-directed work for this course in addition to submitting a summary and journal.

NM205—Philosophy & Establishment of Children’s Ministry

2 credit hours
This course establishes a Biblical view of children’s ministry along with practical methodology for starting and maintaining various types of children’s ministries. Special attention is given to the Biblical concepts of reaching the next generation for Christ as well as training workers within the local church. Since most in North American as well as Cross-Cultural ministries reach children before reaching adults, this class is crucial for the development of a well-rounded missionary or pastor.

NM301—Church Administration

3 credit hours
This men-only course provides comprehensive instruction in a broad range of areas relevant to the local church ministry. In addition to general fundamental instruction about the philosophy of ministry, pertinent topics will be covered including church finances, missions focus and activity, and Sunday school administration. Procedural and practical aspects will include the topics of developing a church calendar, the church constitution, deacon selection and training, and many other vital topics.

NM302—Biblical Counseling

This course studies the methods of Biblical counseling. This course is not designed to foster a false sense of consultant authority or expertise; rather, this study is designed to establish basic parameters that ministry personnel and leaders in the church can use to invest in the lives of fellow believers.

NM303—Outreach Strategies

2 credit hours
This course deals with the responsibility of the church to evangelize its Jerusalem. This practical study examines considering one’s community (geography, saturation, societal needs, etc.) when planning outreach. These same considerations are looked at in light of outreach events such as holidays, Vacation Bible School, friend days, etc.). Students are challenged to think of innovative ways to reach the lost in their local communities.

NM304—Philosophy of Church Music

2 credit hours
This course provides students with a comprehensive, scriptural philosophy and analysis of Biblical church music. The study will include the examination of the psychological and behavioral aspects of music as it relates to a Biblical approach to godly worship. The history of music will be investigated from both Old and New Testament perspectives.

NM305—Mentoring Leaders

This course teaches Christians Biblical principles that allow Jesus to be their model and their guide when they are mentoring and leading others. This course is designed to help students as they instruct, tutor, counsel, and lead others in reproducing followers of Christ.

NM306—Defense of the Faith: Introduction to Apologetics

2 credit hours
This course unveils the necessity for Biblical apologetics while investigating presuppositions, evidences, and approaches used in the defense of the Christian faith. The primary objective of this course is the continued sanctification of the believer for the purpose of ensuring a true and accurate declaration of the gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:15).

This course is a continuation of NM204 and allows students to accomplish internship goals in another ministry culture and with another mentor. The student must complete fifty (50) hours of mentor-directed work for this course in addition to submitting a summary and journal.

This course finalizes the Formal Ministry Internships with a fourth ministry and yet another mentor. This course is conducted alongside the instructor on the campus of one or more secular universities. Students are taught the methods needed for effective cross-cultural evangelism among secular college students of ethnic and religious diversity. Students gain first-hand experience through evangelism on college campuses as they employ skills obtained in the first two years of undergraduate study. Course objectives include, but are not limited to, how to plan and conduct an effective campus outreach program while targeting the end goal of evangelism and discipleship.

NM401—Capstone Ministry Internship 1

9 credit hours
This course is a structured ministry experience approved and facilitated by the BSWE internship coordinator and supervised by a mentor from a selected North American host ministry. The host ministry must reflect the basic philosophy and emphasis of First Baptist Church of Milford and its ministries. The mentor will ensure that the student receives exposure to predetermined core objectives and will formally evaluate the student in various aspects of ministry. Students must complete 600 contact hours with the North American host ministry (20 consecutive weeks without leave). Normally, the student is registered for this class for the fall semester of his senior year; however, in some cases, internships may begin during the summer prior to the student’s senior year. Field experience will be scheduled only with the internship coordinator’s approval.

NM402—Capstone Ministry Internship 2

9 credit hours
This course is the continuation of NM401 and is to be congruent (without leave) with the same ministry. The host ministry mentor(s) will be responsible for continued discipleship while ensuring the student’s exposure to new challenges and successes while experiencing new targeted objectives. The on-site mentor will again formally evaluate the student. Students must complete the 600 contact hours (20 consecutive weeks without leave).
